Online security is very important, especially if you´re buying and holding cryptocurrency. One way to secure your accounts is using your phone number as 2-factor authentication (also known as 2FA). Although not the safest option, it is certainly better than having no extra level of security. As you will be relying on your phone number as security, it’s important to keep your information up to date.
So what if you have a new phone number or had your existing phone lost or stolen? Well, with the Binance exchange, there will be 2 ways to change your phone number, depending on if you still have access to your phone.
How to Change Your Phone Number on Binance with Access to your Cell/Phone
If you still have access to your previous mobile/cell phone number, you can change this by logging into Binance. Once you are in your account, you can change your number by disabling SMS Authentication on the security page. Here, you click the option ‘Security verification unavailable’ and follow the instructions given.
Below is a step-by-step guide to changing your number.
Step 1: Login into Binance & go to Security Tab
“Log In” to Binance using your existing login details and old phone number.
From the homepage, head to the “Profile” icon.
Choose “Security” from the dropdown menu.
Step 2: Disabling your Phone Number
From the “Security” screen, navigate to the “2FA” section.
Here you will be able to see and configure all of your 2 factor authentication settings.
On the “SMS Authentication” section, click “Disable“.
This will then take you to a “Security Verification” page.
Step 3: Security Verification
You will then be prompted for your 2FA either via phone or email to minimize fraudulent activity and will need to enter a verification code.
If you don’t have access to your old number, click onto “Security verification unavailable?” at the bottom of the screen.
Step 4: Resetting your Security Verification
After clicking on “Security verification unavailable?”, you will be taken to a page to reset this.
You can either reset your phone number or your email from this page.
To reset your phone number, click on the phone number option and then ‘Confirm reset‘ when prompted.
Step 5: Email Verification
To reset your phone number, you will need to use 2FA.
When you “Confirm reset” you will need to do so via email (if you do not have access to your old phone number).
From here, choose to “Send code via email“. This will then send a 6 digit code to your email.
Once you have your 6 digit code, you can copy and paste this into the page where you sent your verification code from.
Step 6: Changing your Phone Number.
Once you have entered your code, you will be taken to the ‘Reset Security Items‘ page.
From here, click on “New phone number” to reset this.
Then enter your new phone number along with the country code and choose “Get Code“.
This will send you another 6 digit verification code via SMS.
Enter the SMS verification code back on Binance and then choose “Reset Now“.
This will change your phone number for you.
How to Change Your Phone Number on Binance without Access to your Cell/Mobile
If you do not have access to the phone number associated with your account, you will need to change your number from the login page. Here you will need to enter your login details and then click on ‘Security verification unavailable‘.
Then, simply follow the on-screen instructions to change your phone number.
Binance 2FA Security Key
It’s important to protect your crypto assets, especially on cryptocurrency exchanges such as Binance. Using your mobile phone as two-factor authentication is certainly better than no security, however I would recommend increasing your security.
Binance recommends using a security key. One that I personally use and is compatible with Binance is the Yubico YubiKeys. The YubiKey you choose will depend on the hardware you use, I have an older MacBook Air which I use the YubiKey 5 NFC, and a YubiKey 5Ci for my newer MacBook Pro. The YubiKey 5Ci is also compatible with my iPhone 12.
So, just make sure you do your research before choosing a security key, it does take time to get used to it, but it’s a great bit of kit.
